Failure to Screen Community Scheme Indicative of DUP Aversion to Equality – Murphy

Conor Murphy MLA | Newry Sinn Fein

Sinn Féin’s Conor Murphy said today the failure of the DUP communities minister to follow normal equality impact processes before doling out money to Orange Halls is indicative of his party’s deep aversion to equality mechanisms.

And the Newry Armagh election candidate said this is another example of the DUP’s cavalier approach to public finance, which is the heart of the current RHI scandal.

Conor Murphy said:

“News that the pilot community halls scheme was not subject to an equality screening is further evidence of the DUP’s arrogance and contempt for the public.

“The screening was only completed five days after Communities Minister Mr Givan announced that 90 organisations had won funding.

“The fact that the programme had not been not signed off by a senior official until three days after ‘The Detail’ asked the Department to confirm if its Community Halls Pilot Programme had equality screened is most concerning.

“The failure of the DUP communities minister to follow normal equality impact processes before doling out money to Orange Halls is indicative of his party’s deep aversion to equality mechanisms.

“But it is also another example of the DUP’s cavalier approach to public finances, which is the heart of the current RHI scandal.”
